Award Winner 2010

The 2010 Walter Tiemann Prize is awarded to David Bennewith (born in 1977) for his book Joseph Churchward.

Born in New Zealand, and now living and working in the Netherlands, David Bennewith worked on and researched this book for three years.

The outstanding work is a multi-layered, empathetic portrait in which the carefully prepared material is allowed to unfold of its own accord, revealing its own power against the backdrop of the unpretentious, guiding written hand of David Bennewith. With this publication, he creates an exhibition in which each individual component is allocated to precisely the right space, with the greatest possible regard for its communicative value and creative power.

The result is a book in which not merely each turn of the page is self-explanatory. The original material is, to a certain extent, left ‘raw’. Consequently, it provides a valuable insight into the working processes of Joseph Churchward, an immensely productive and innovative typesetter and graphic designer who already enjoys cult status today, especially among younger generations.

In his mixture of documentation, portrait, essay collection and font sample book, David Bennewith has created a homage which wakes even more curiosity.
